His was the mind of the artist and the philosopher crushed by reality; the Romantic soul starved amidst the greed of modern society.

It is in this state that Raphaël stumbles upon the antique shop — that dark, labyrinthine place where the past seems to whisper from every corner. Here the world of tangible objects becomes a bridge to the metaphysical. The old dealer, a figure both sinister and wise, presents him with relics that embody centuries of human longing. Among them lies the strange piece of wild ass’s skin, inscribed with an Oriental text promising boundless power — yet at the cost of life itself. With each granted wish, it shrinks, consuming the very essence of its owner.

When Raphaël accepts it, he does so with the resignation of a man who has nothing left to lose. Modern civilization tempts us with precisely such illusions: wealth, pleasure, knowledge, the conquest of nature itself. But the more absolute our mastery, the more fragile our being becomes. For Raphaël, the miraculous skin becomes emblematic of that fatal contract — a visible form of the invisible exchange that takes place within every human soul between desire and existence.

Restored to prosperity by the skin’s first magic, Raphaël plunges into the whirlpool of Parisian high society. The city, with its glittering salons and ravenous appetites, becomes the stage upon which he rehearses every fantasy he had once suppressed. He is feted, admired, envied — a man who suddenly possesses the means to satisfy every whim. Women, jewels, banquets, speculative entertainments — nothing lies beyond his reach. Yet with every fulfilled desire, the skin placed secretly in his possession continues to shrink. No longer a talisman of liberation, it becomes a measure of his remaining days, his life’s clock counting down in tangible form.

What fascinated me as an observer of the world was how quickly pleasure becomes torpor. Raphaël’s extravagant revels, his love affairs, and his brilliant wit all fail to mask a growing dread. The more he experiences, the less capacity he has to feel. He begins to understand that happiness, like the skin, diminishes with use. I wanted to portray this oscillation between indulgence and terror as a form of modern damnation. Their love, unacknowledged yet profound, represented for him the ideal of selfless passion. But poverty and pride had driven him away, and the world’s cynicism had hardened his heart. How easily intellectual aspiration succumbs to material temptation — that is the tragedy I sought to reveal.
