Key Chapters

Light is the foundation of every photograph. Before we talk lenses or exposure, we need to talk about how light behaves—how it wraps, scatters, fades, or explodes. Every scene you encounter is defined by it. I learned early on, especially during my assignments for *National Geographic* and *LIFE*, that light has attitude. It can whisper across a face or lash out like a storm. Knowing how to read that attitude changes everything.

Natural light is my first teacher. The morning and evening hours teach subtlety—low sun angles gift texture and warmth, inviting you to work slower and closer. Midday light, harsh and straight down, challenges you to seek refuge in shade, to bounce or subtract rather than add. I don’t fight light anymore. I cooperate with it. If it’s soft, I go gentle. If it’s raw, I lean into its truth. Light defines narrative; it sets voice.

Artificial light, namely flash, is where creative freedom kicks in. It’s the ability to shape what the world offers you. I’ve spent years learning to make flashes behave like windows or firelight. The trick isn’t overpowering nature; it’s learning to whisper back. Balance is the secret. My approach is to treat the flash not as an intruder but as something that joins the scene. When you understand how to balance light—sunset on one side, soft fill on the other—you become a storyteller working in layers.

Every frame becomes a question of direction: Where is the light coming from? What is it revealing? What is it hiding? The difference between a flat portrait and one that sings is often a matter of moving a light six inches to one side. Photography lives in those inches. Once you start noticing light’s language, your camera becomes fluent in emotion.

I’ve always said flash is both a problem and a solution. Many photographers fear it because it feels mechanical, intrusive, too controlled. But once you understand its rhythm, flash becomes liberating—it allows you to make your own light when the world gives you nothing.

Early in my career, I shot with big strobes, miles of cords, and unpredictable results. These days, portable speedlights have changed everything. You can pack a full studio into a backpack and still catch your flight. But the principle hasn’t changed—flash is about balance. The best flash photos don’t look like flash at all.

The trick lies in respecting ambient light. I always start by exposing for the world as it is—the background, the ambient scene—and then add flash to complement what’s missing. You want the flash to feel like it belongs, as if it’s part of the sun, a lamp in the room, or simply a reflection from someone’s memory. When ambient and strobe blend, you get dimension and mood in equal measure.

And then there’s direction. Flash has hard edges if you let it, but a diffuser, a wall bounce, or even a crumpled reflector can take those edges away. Light should caress, not club. When you learn to bend light around a subject rather than blast it at them, your portraits gain depth, your reportage gains intimacy, and your confidence behind the camera grows exponentially.

Flash is not about the gear—it’s about generosity. You’re adding light to reveal something, to help the viewer see what they otherwise might miss. That’s the spirit I carry every time I press the test button and watch that little pop illuminate a world waiting to be told.
