Key Chapters
To direct life intelligently, one must first understand the machinery of mind. You possess two minds in cooperative function: the conscious and the subconscious. The conscious mind is the reasoning faculty—the watchman at the gate, analyzing, judging, and selecting the impressions that enter. It is the operator. The subconscious mind is the engine room, the realm of instinct, memory, and creative power. Whatever seed the conscious mind plants, the subconscious will bring to harvest.
Most of humanity drifts because this interaction is uncontrolled. Thoughts of doubt, fear, and limitation, entertained consciously, are accepted by the subconscious as commands, reproducing them faithfully in outward conditions. Thus, the mind is continuously creating circumstances, whether the operator knows it or not. Once you grasp this law, you cease to war against effects and begin governing causes.
To harmonize the two minds, discipline must be established. The conscious mind must dwell exclusively upon ideals of health, abundance, and achievement. These thoughts, repeated with feeling, provide definite instructions to the subconscious. Gradually, the inner pattern changes, and the outer world conforms. The subconscious accepts suggestions most readily when the conscious mind is quiet, as in the moments before sleep or during meditation. Then, your word becomes law to your world.
Remember: the subconscious is impartial. It will produce corn if you plant corn, thistles if you plant thistles. The responsibility rests with the conscious mind to choose wisely.
No man may command power until he can command his mind. Concentration is the art of singleness of thought, the ability to hold one idea in the field of consciousness to the exclusion of all others. It is the foundation upon which constructive thinking is built. Without it, thoughts scatter like untempered light; with it, they become a beam that pierces any obstacle.
Exercise will train this faculty as surely as it strengthens muscle. Begin by sitting quietly and stilling the body, for physical rest precedes mental poise. Then fix attention upon a single object or idea. The moment you notice distraction, gently bring the mind back. At first, this effort feels laborious, but perseverance changes effort into habit. Eventually, you will hold your thought unbroken for minutes, then quarters of an hour, and the sensation of power will rise within you.
Concentration is not strain; it is controlled relaxation. It aligns the individual mind with universal intelligence. When you can think only the thought you choose to think, and think it continuously, you are no longer a slave of circumstance but the architect of it. The student who achieves true concentration discovers that channels open spontaneously; intuition becomes clearer; and conditions that once resisted change yield as easily as shadows before sunlight.
