In my experience, leaders who lead with control rather than trust end up stifling creativity and engagement. They might achieve short-term compliance, but they rarely inspire commitment. People choose to follow leaders they trust because trust breeds safety, and safety allows people to take initiative, speak up, and invest more of themselves in their work.
There’s also a reciprocal truth here: trust grows when leaders first extend it. When you trust people before they’ve fully proven themselves, you’re showing faith in their potential. That act changes the dynamic—it invites them to live up to your belief. Of course, maintaining trust means matching your behavior to your words. A promise made must be a promise kept. And when mistakes occur—and they always do—it’s not the mistake that destroys trust, it’s the cover-up or the denial.
We encourage leaders to think of trust as a daily practice. Ask yourself: how are my actions today reinforcing or eroding the trust others place in me? Because the cumulative answer to that question defines who you are as a leader.
Servant leadership isn’t a soft or passive approach—it’s a choice to lead by serving, and that takes strength. The essence of servant leadership lies in reversing the old leadership pyramid. Instead of the people working to serve the leader, the leader exists to serve their people. When your mindset shifts from ‘How can my team make me look good?’ to ‘How can I help my team succeed?’, you unleash exponential potential.
In practical terms, servant leadership means making sure your team has what they need—clear goals, the right training, and access to decision-making authority. But it’s not just about removing obstacles; it’s about presence and intention. It means seeing your people as whole individuals, not as tools for productivity. Servant leaders care about performance, yes, but they also care about purpose and well-being.
Throughout my career, I’ve witnessed how organizations that adopt servant leadership cultures build higher engagement and resilience. When people know their leader has their back, they’re more willing to innovate, take responsibility, and stretch themselves. Servant leadership also requires humility: accepting that your role is to help others shine. You lead best when your focus is on developing the capabilities, confidence, and character of those around you. That’s how we make leadership sustainable across generations.
