Key Chapters
So much of our suffering around love arises from the stories we believe about it. Many of us have internalized cultural myths—that love must be perfect, that it can only exist if we are chosen, or that to love means to lose ourselves. These stories create a painful separation between the idealized image of love and the everyday reality of human connection.
In my own practice and teaching, I’ve met people who feel broken because their experience of love didn’t match what they were taught to expect. We see love as something outside of us, bestowed by another, and when it disappears, we think we have failed. But this misunderstanding is rooted in confusion: love is not dependent on constant affirmation or romantic fulfillment. It’s an awareness that allows us to recognize our shared humanity, even when relationships end or change shape.
To see through these myths, mindfulness invites us into inquiry. We can ask: What images of love have I inherited? How do they make me contract or disconnect? Through that gentle examination, we loosen our attachment to false ideals and open to the truth that love is not a commodity—it is a practice of presence. When I meet another person without trying to mold them into my fantasy, I am meeting them in real love.
All the love we extend to others begins with the ability to care for ourselves. This is not vanity or self-indulgence; it’s the grounding of compassion. When we turn mindfulness inward, we learn to see our thoughts and emotions with patience and curiosity rather than self-criticism.
Many of us carry the belief that self-love is selfish or that we must earn our worth through achievement. But the practice of loving-kindness meditation—what in Pali is called *metta*—teaches otherwise. Beginning simply, we repeat phrases such as, "May I be happy. May I be safe. May I be at peace." At first, this may feel awkward or artificial, especially if we have a lifetime of self-judgment behind us. Yet over time, as mindfulness strengthens our attention, these words become expressions of truth rather than hope.
To love ourselves is to accept that imperfection is part of the human condition. When I allow my anger, fear, or sadness to arise without pushing it away, I’m affirming a basic trust: that nothing in me is unworthy of awareness. This acceptance transforms the field of our hearts. Self-love becomes not an escape from reality but a way of embracing it fully.
