Key Chapters
When we meet Sydney, she’s a woman suspended in time. The sudden heart attack that took her husband Andrew has shattered the rhythm of her well-ordered life. Their marriage had been one of deep companionship and partnership, and his absence leaves not only an emotional void but also a loss of identity. Sydney finds herself going through the motions — keeping up appearances, handling finances, attending social gatherings out of habit — but none of it touches her soul anymore.
I wrote Sydney’s early grief in deliberate quiet tones: the silence of the empty house, the way she moves through rooms still holding his scent, the effort it takes to even decide what to eat. For anyone who has lost someone close, these moments ring painfully true. Her friends, though devoted, cannot lift that emptiness from her. They offer advice and distraction, but grief is not a wound that others can heal for us. It is intensely private, and only time and courage can soften its edges.
I wanted readers to understand that grief is both an imprisonment and a mystery. It keeps you frozen in the moment of loss, unwilling to move forward for fear of betraying the memory of the one you loved. Sydney’s initial resistance — her insistence that she will “never” love again, “never” travel again, “never” open herself to life again — gives the novel its title. Those “nevers” are walls she builds to protect herself, yet they also stand between her and the life waiting on the other side of suffering.
It is through her friends’ insistence that Sydney finally agrees to leave home for a short vacation in France. At first, she feels it’s a betrayal — how could she allow herself to enjoy life while Andrew is gone? But beneath her polite refusals lies exhaustion. She needs air. Arrival in France becomes, for her, more than just travel; it is a symbolic crossing over, an unspoken permission to start existing again.
France offers her gentleness. I chose the French setting because of its sensuality — not only in romance but in life’s details: the golden morning light, the smell of coffee on narrow streets, the balance between conversation, food, and reflection. Sydney begins walking aimlessly, exploring small towns, observing people who live differently. Gradually, she notices her senses waking up — color returning, laughter not feeling so foreign. I wanted to capture those fragile moments when grief loosens its grip just enough for curiosity to slip in.
During these chapters, Sydney learns independence anew. For the first time in decades, she’s not defined by her partnership or responsibilities back home. She’s simply Sydney — a woman rediscovering who she is when no one’s expectations press against her. Each day she begins to reclaim small joys: sketching at a café, buying flowers for herself, speaking hesitant French with strangers. These quiet victories are emotional revolutions. Healing, after all, begins not in grand gestures but in ordinary acts of reengagement with the world.
