Take the example of a company suffering customer churn. The quick fix might be to increase discounts or improve marketing, but after examining operations, leaders discovered the real problem was a trust deficit with frontline staff who lacked authority to resolve issues. By fixing empowerment, not discounts, they fixed churn. Identifying the real problem requires humility: leaders must accept that they may be part of the problem. In our framework, this first step demands curiosity, data, and listening. It requires leaders to engage deeply, not superficially, with the challenge before them. When you move fast on the right problem, you gain exponential advantage. That clarity will make everything that follows—trust, planning, communication—meaningful and effective.
Once we know the problem, the next question is: who will come with us to fix it? Trust is the accelerant that turns an idea into coordinated action. Without trust, even the most brilliant solution stalls. Our research shows that trust rests on three pillars—authenticity, logic, and empathy. Authenticity means people experience you as real; logic means they believe in your judgment; empathy means they feel your care. When any of these pillars are weak, trust wobbles. Building trust quickly is about strengthening all three—not through grand gestures, but through daily choices.
Imagine leading a team through change. Authenticity begins when you speak plainly, acknowledging both what you know and what you don’t. Logic shows up when your reasoning is sound and you share the rationale behind decisions. Empathy flows when you listen actively and respond to concerns without defensiveness. These behaviors invite people into alignment. In organizations like Uber, where we’ve advised on rebuilding trust after crisis, speed returned only when leadership behaved authentically, explained their purpose clearly, and designed systems that demonstrated care.
Trust is not a soft skill—it’s a measurable leader’s asset. Practically, you can design meetings, communications, and interactions to reinforce authenticity, logic, and empathy. Speed grows from trust because trust enables coordination without friction. When people believe in you, they stop second-guessing, they start executing. That’s when moving fast becomes sustainable, because trust reduces resistance while deepening commitment.
