When I became CEO, I launched an initiative to rekindle Pfizer’s sense of urgency and courage—to transform a traditional healthcare giant into a nimble innovator ready for the future. We called it “Speed of Science.” It meant cutting bureaucracy, empowering scientists, and creating a climate where bold decisions replaced cautious consensus. I did not know then that this cultural transformation was the very foundation we would need when the world changed in early 2020.

The pandemic would test not only our innovation pipeline, but also the soul of our company: our ability to act selflessly, fearlessly, and in service to humanity.

When the first whispers of a new coronavirus emerged from Wuhan, most of the world observed cautiously. But as infection rates accelerated and death tolls mounted, it was evident that this virus would not respect borders. By March 2020, economies were shutting down, and the world was waiting for science to step up.

Inside Pfizer, I convened our top leadership and scientific teams. The question was not whether we could help—but how. At first, there were reasons to hesitate. Vaccine development was not our foremost area; our past programs had been modest compared to our pharmaceutical portfolio. Vaccines often took 10–15 years to develop. But clarity overcame doubt: if not us, then who?

We decided to pursue the fastest path to an effective vaccine, but only by maintaining the strongest safety standards. While others sought governmental funding, I made a conscious decision: Pfizer would invest its own resources—over $2 billion—without public money. It was a bold, even risky choice, but one that preserved our independence and scientific integrity. The world needed a solution based on science, not politics.

That call to action transformed every corner of Pfizer. Thousands of colleagues across continents mobilized overnight. Laboratories pivoted, supply chains were reimagined, and everything nonessential was paused. Our scientists knew that each day saved could mean thousands of lives spared. From that moment, every second counted.
