Key Chapters

I grew up in Govan, a district built on the backbone of shipbuilding and honest labor. My early life wasn’t glamorous, but it was rich in character. From my father, a hardworking plater in the shipyards, I learned the dignity of work and the pride that comes from doing something well. From my mother, I learned kindness and concern for others—a balance of toughness and empathy that became vital in managing large teams later in life. Football became my world early on, but it never separated me from my roots. The community around me valued loyalty and persistence. In Govan, people didn’t talk about leadership, but they lived it every day—through reliability, through showing up even when it was hard. Those early experiences taught me that no leader succeeds without humility. You need to understand where you come from, and you must never forget the people who helped you get there. The idea of leading by example came naturally because I’d seen it all my life. Growing up amid the noise and rhythm of the shipyards, I saw men who took pride in doing their job right, even if no one thanked them. Leadership starts there—with taking pride in performance, no matter the recognition.

My first managerial post at East Stirlingshire was a test of adaptability. I was still very young, managing players who were older than me, some skeptical of my authority. That experience toughened me. It taught me that leadership isn’t about age or status—it’s about conviction. At St. Mirren, I developed a stronger sense of discipline, learning to balance authority with fairness. Every decision I made there reinforced a truth: a team reflects its manager. If you demand professionalism, you must show it yourself. At Aberdeen, those lessons transformed into a philosophy. Aberdeen wasn’t a big club, but we didn’t accept second place. I insisted that we could challenge Celtic and Rangers, and that belief turned into reality when we won the league and defeated Real Madrid in the Cup Winners’ Cup. Those years taught me that leadership is fundamentally about culture. You must build an environment where people believe they can achieve more than they ever imagined.
