God’s call often interrupts our comfort. My own story is a testament to that truth. When the invitation came to lead World Vision, I resisted. At that time, I was president of Lenox, a renowned luxury goods company. I lived in comfort, secure in my success. The idea of leaving it all—my income, my status, my achievements—to join a humanitarian organization seemed irrational. But God was asking a bigger question: would I trust His call more than I trusted my career?

The call to leadership, as I came to understand, is rarely about our qualifications. Scripture is filled with reluctant leaders—Moses, Gideon, Jeremiah—who questioned their ability to fulfill God’s mission. What God seeks is not ability but availability. He is looking for people who say yes even when it costs them. When I finally said yes to World Vision, I discovered a purpose far deeper than anything I had pursued before.

Leadership, in this light, is not about climbing to the top but about surrendering control. The call to lead is really a call to serve, to allow God to work through your gifts and flaws to bless others. And so I learned to redefine success: it was no longer about how much I could advance, but how faithfully I could respond. That decision changed everything—from how I approached strategy and team dynamics to how I measured impact. It reminded me that every leader’s most important question is not, “What can I achieve?” but “Am I being faithful to what God has asked of me?”
