It signals that you refuse to accept the limits imposed upon you.

To embrace ambition, you must make peace with the discomfort it brings. People will question your motives, doubt your capacity, and tell you to stay in your lane. But every time you choose courage over compliance, you create space for others to do the same. In practical terms, this means setting goals that reflect your worth—not the world’s expectations—and preparing to meet resistance not with resentment but with resolve. To lead from the outside is to declare, again and again, that your dreams are valid and your power is real.

No leader—especially one who begins on the outside—can escape fear. Fear speaks in the voice of doubt: What if I’m not ready? What if I fail? What if no one believes in me? I’ve asked myself those questions many times. But fear isn’t your enemy; it’s your compass. It tells you where the boundaries are, where the growth will happen.

Failure, too, is a teacher. When I lost the gubernatorial race, it was devastating—but it was also clarifying. I realized that leadership is not measured by titles or victories; it’s about how you stand in integrity when the world says no.
