Real innovation asks for discomfort, dissent, and sometimes failure. It emerges from contradictions that can’t be neatly managed. By confronting this paradox, leaders take the crucial first step toward authenticity — acknowledging that deep creativity cannot live within a system designed solely for predictability.

We have, in recent decades, perfected the art of shallow innovation: the incremental, the polished, the safely clever. It is the endless redesign of packaging, the derivative app, the minor service tweak that offers the illusion of progress. In the business press, these are hailed as success stories. Yet they rarely challenge assumptions or alter industries — they are innovation without depth.

Shallow innovation flourishes because it feels productive. It provides immediate deliverables and avoids the anxiety of deep change. Managers can celebrate results without ever risking transformation. Yet the cost is immense. When organizations reward only the quick and visible, they inadvertently teach employees to value novelty over meaning. The deeper questions — why we innovate, for whom, and toward what end — fade into the background.

True creativity requires a tolerance for slowness and uncertainty. It demands that we think beyond short-term gains. If our innovation laboratories are producing only shiny prototypes rather than substantive reimaginings of value, we are failing the very spirit of innovation. The fatigue we feel around the term stems from this hollowness: we collectively suspect that beneath the slogans, there is very little courage left.

In confronting shallow innovation, I urge leaders to reorient metrics around significance rather than speed. Meaningful innovation may take longer to gestate, but it is the only path to lasting differentiation and genuine cultural renewal.
