Key Chapters
I was born in Hyderabad, India, in a household that valued education and ideas more than material success. My father was a civil servant, an economist who encouraged me to question assumptions. My mother, a Sanskrit scholar, taught me the quiet strength of perseverance and empathy. Growing up in India in the 1970s, I was surrounded by scarcity and possibility in equal measure, and I learned early that genuine curiosity was the greatest luxury of all.
My love for cricket taught me lessons that stretched beyond sport. Cricket, much like leadership, is about patience, teamwork, and learning from failure. As a young man, I wanted to be a professional cricketer, but I eventually realized that my passion for building things—with circuits, with code—was my true calling. Studying electrical engineering at Manipal Institute of Technology and later moving to the United States for graduate school exposed me to a new world of ideas, where innovation was not constrained by scarcity but fueled by imagination.
Those early experiences shaped my conviction that empathy and curiosity are the foundations of learning. These traits—sometimes undervalued in technical fields—became the compass by which I would later lead teams and define success. The son of an economist and a scholar, I began to see technology not as an end in itself but as an instrument to empower people. That belief would become the heart of Microsoft’s cultural transformation decades later.
When I joined Microsoft in 1992, I entered a company in the midst of its own youthful exuberance. Microsoft was synonymous with personal computing. The energy was palpable, the ambition boundless. Yet, beneath the drive was an assumption that success would continue indefinitely. I started in the Windows NT group, an engineering division pushing the boundaries of enterprise software. It was there I learned the importance of collaboration—though, ironically, collaboration wasn’t always the dominant ethos of the company at that time.
Microsoft in the 1990s was powered by brilliant, competitive minds. Debate was a currency, and intensity was a badge of honor. But while this environment drove innovation, it could also create silos. I began to understand that innovation thrives not only on intelligence but on trust and listening—qualities that stem from empathy.
Over the next two decades, I moved through various teams—from the Online Services division to leading the Cloud and Enterprise group. Each new role deepened my understanding of how technology could evolve from a tool for productivity into a platform for empowerment. I learned that the essence of leadership wasn’t about being the smartest in the room but about bringing out the best in others. That realization would prepare me for the challenge of a lifetime: redefining what Microsoft could mean to the world.
