Key Chapters
After being released from jail, Petey wants to change. But change isn’t easy, especially when everyone still sees you as the bad guy — and maybe, a part of you still believes that too. This is where Petey begins his journey in *Fetch-22*. He’s free, but what does freedom mean when you’re trapped in guilt? His relationship with Lil’ Petey becomes the heart of this question. Lil’ Petey, despite being a clone, is everything Petey isn’t: cheerful, forgiving, full of compassion. Their bond is awkward at first — a mix of irritation and affection. Petey doesn’t know how to handle all that love. But as they spend time together, he begins to understand that Lil’ Petey isn’t naive; he’s brave in a different way. His kindness is a choice, not ignorance.
Throughout the story, Petey confronts his old instincts — to run, to scowl, to shut people out. But every time Lil’ Petey reaches out to him, a small crack appears in that tough exterior. There’s a scene where Petey looks at his son’s drawing of them together and says nothing. He doesn’t have the words for love yet — but he feels it. This quiet evolution becomes one of the moral engines of the story. For me, writing Petey was about exploring the idea that doing good isn’t about being perfect — it’s about trying again and again, even when you fail. Petey’s redemption doesn’t come in one heroic gesture; it comes in small, honest acts of care. And that’s something every reader, young or old, can relate to.
Lil’ Petey might look like a silly kitten wearing a superhero cape, but his heart is one of my favorite parts of this series. In *Fetch-22*, his optimism faces its biggest test. He sees the good in Petey even when no one else does. He believes that people — and cats, and even tadpoles — can change. That belief isn’t easy to hold onto in a world full of mistakes and mischief, but Lil’ Petey keeps shining anyway. His courage doesn’t come from strength or power; it comes from empathy.
When he meets 22, the angry tadpole who feels rejected and unloved, he doesn’t see a villain. He sees someone hurting. And that perspective changes everything. Instead of fighting hate with hate, Lil’ Petey responds with compassion. That moment, for me, captures the book’s emotional core — kindness isn’t weakness. It’s the courage to keep caring even when it hurts. Through Lil’ Petey, I wanted young readers to see that standing up for what’s right doesn’t always mean fighting. Sometimes it means listening, forgiving, or offering a hug when it’s least expected.
Of course, Lil’ Petey still gets into lots of hilarious trouble — silly puns, clumsy moments, and heartfelt mix-ups that make the serious themes easier to digest. That’s always been my approach: humor is a gateway to empathy. By laughing with him, readers open their hearts to his message. Lil’ Petey represents the best version of who we can be when we let love lead us.
