Key Chapters
The whole idea started when I walked into middle school for the first time and realized I was officially a little fish in a big pond. My mom thought keeping a journal would be ‘a great way to express myself.’ I wasn’t planning on writing down any mushy ‘feelings.’ I just wanted to document what actually happens, especially since I was sure I’d be famous someday.
That first week was brutal. Everywhere I looked there were older, louder, taller kids. My best friend, Rowley Jefferson, was with me, but even he didn’t make things easier with his over-the-top cheerfulness. It’s hard to act cool when your friend still says things like ‘Hiya, pals!’ and thinks cartoon sound effects are hilarious. Still, Rowley’s my best friend, and as much as he drives me nuts, he’s the only one I can count on—most of the time.
I started plotting how to move up the popularity ladder. Maybe if I got my name out there in the right way—sports, talent shows, comics—people would start noticing me. But middle school has a way of making even your best ideas explode in your face. Every time I thought I was getting ahead, something ridiculous would happen, and suddenly I was the punchline again. But hey, that’s the life of a wimpy kid—one step forward, two pratfalls back.
If middle school wasn’t enough to drive me crazy, my family picked up the slack. My mom is always on some new parenting mission, dragging me into things like ‘Reading Is Fun Week’ or trying to get me to ‘share my emotions.’ My dad, on the other hand, thinks I spend too much time indoors. He keeps trying to toughen me up, like going outside will magically turn me into a football star.
Then there’s Rodrick, my older brother, who lives to make my life miserable. He’s in a band called Loded Diper—don’t even ask—and he’s turned pranking me into an art form. Every time I think I’ve outsmarted him, he comes up with some new humiliation. And as if that’s not enough, there’s Manny, my little brother, who basically gets away with everything just because he’s cute. He could draw on the walls, and Mom would call it ‘creative expression.’ When I do the same? Grounded.
It’s chaos in my house pretty much all the time. There’s never a quiet moment, never any privacy, and somehow I’m always the one blamed when things go wrong. But deep down—though I’d never admit it out loud—my family keeps life from being totally boring. Still, it’s hard not to feel like the only sane person in a house full of people who think they’re normal.
