Key Chapters

When Denji officially joins Public Safety under Makima’s supervision, he believes he’s finally won the lottery of life. For someone who once slept next to a trash heap and hunted devils just to eat moldy bread, being a government devil hunter feels like paradise. But paradise here has rules, and Makima is the keeper of them all. Her way of leading Denji is calculated kindness, a mix of warmth and threat. She gives him affection just enough to keep him yearning, but never enough to quench his hunger. Denji doesn’t see the cage forming around him—he sees a dream. But for the reader, that imbalance of power foreshadows the tragedy of dependency that drives this entire arc.

Through Denji’s interactions with Makima, I wanted to show how manipulation often comes cloaked in tenderness. Denji is too naive, too desperate for connection, to sense the depth of Machima’s control. In a world filled with monstrous devils, she is the most human form of danger: someone who uses love as a leash. Denji’s training, his missions, even his sense of purpose all begin to orbit around her approval.

Despite this, there’s also curiosity in the dynamic. Makima represents something Denji doesn’t understand—the stability of someone powerful, self-controlled, and almost divine. To a boy raised in filth, her elegance feels like salvation. Yet she is the first devil he will confront who doesn’t need horns to inspire fear.

Power enters like a whirlwind, literally splattering the calm out of Denji’s new life. As the Blood Fiend, she is driven by instinct more than reason, impulsive, hilarious, and deadly. I wrote Power to uncoil the tension between brutality and innocence. She kills without hesitation but also grieves without shame. When she manipulates Denji into helping her rescue her pet cat, Meowy, she does so not out of cruelty, but from a pure, almost childlike love. For Power, Meowy is the only being she trusts. Through her, I wanted to show that even devils have hearts buried under their monstrous instincts.

Denji, of course, falls for the bait. Power’s promise of affection—so trivial, yet so intoxicating—drives him into one of the most gruesome and emotional battles yet: the confrontation with the Bat Devil. The scene is both terrifying and absurdly human. The Bat Devil holds Meowy hostage as bait, mocking human empathy as weakness, and Denji plunges in with the reckless courage of someone who would rather die fighting than live empty. His chainsaws roar not just against monsters, but against that gnawing emptiness inside him that never stops demanding meaning.

When Denji defeats the Bat Devil, the victory is short-lived. The blood has barely dried before the Leech Devil arrives, drawn by the scent of battle and dying flesh. The fight with the Leech Devil is almost symbolic; it’s Denji battling exhaustion and futility itself. Each time he revs his chainsaws, he’s reaffirming his place in a world that doesn’t want him. Aki’s arrival to save him and Power anchors the story again in its theme of fragile connection—how survival, one way or another, forces people to rely on each other.
