Key Chapters

Changemaking begins from the inside out. What separates changemakers from passive observers is not their intelligence or authority, but their mindset. I define this mindset through three capacities: empathy, agency, and resilience.

Empathy allows us to see the world through others’ eyes. It turns abstract problems into human stories and transforms frustration into purposeful action. I’ve taught thousands of students empathy exercises that reveal how listening—not persuading—is the foundation of true leadership. For instance, when one engineering student realized that empathy meant being curious rather than corrective, he redesigned his team’s project communication to include listening circles. That small shift improved creativity and trust across the team.

Agency is the belief and capacity to act. Too often, people feel incapable because they equate influence with hierarchy. Yet changemaking flourishes from the margins as much as the center. Agency grows when we ask, “What can I do with what I have, where I am, right now?” In the book, I describe how agency can be built incrementally—one experiment, one conversation, one email at a time.

Resilience sustains changemakers when progress feels impossible. Change takes time, and setbacks are inevitable. Through resilience, we reframe frustration as learning. In my own journey founding StartSomeGood, I faced countless rejections. But each failure sharpened the mission rather than dulled it. This resilience is not innate—it’s cultivated through community, reflection, and self-compassion.

When empathy, agency, and resilience converge, they create a dynamic feedback loop: empathy drives meaningful goals, agency turns them into action, and resilience enables persistence. This triad is the engine of sustainable leadership.

The greatest barrier to changemaking is not a lack of ideas—it’s fear. Fear of failing, fear of being judged, fear of not being ready. Most people wait for confidence to precede action, but research shows that confidence often follows action. In my classes, I challenge students to take a ‘micro-step’—a single, small action aligned with their vision. The moment they act, fear diminishes.

Through numerous stories, I illustrate how courage is cultivated, not innate. A social worker who was terrified of public speaking learned to share her proposal for community funding simply by practicing her speech with trusted colleagues. An employee who doubted her leadership potential volunteered to lead a team project; through that experience, she discovered capabilities that transformed her career.

The psychology of change reveals that social conformity can suppress initiative. We’re wired to fit in, not to stand out. Yet changemakers redefine belonging by aligning identity with purpose rather than approval. Every time you act in alignment with what truly matters, you reinforce your internal authority.

Courage, then, is not the absence of fear—it’s the decision to move forward despite it. The practice of courage compounds with use, just like a muscle strengthening with every exertion. By continuously showing up for what you believe in, you rewire your relationship with uncertainty, turning it from paralysis into possibility.
