Key Chapters
The first step in fighting fear is to call it what it is. Too often, we dress fear up as 'realism' or 'being responsible,' when deep down, it’s simply the belief that we can’t handle what might happen. I learned early in my career that fear doesn’t disappear—it just changes costume. When I launched my blog, when I published my first book, and even when I walked onto a TED stage, that same anxiety whispered, 'Who do you think you are?' But I also realized that fear has a purpose. It alerts us to risk, yes, but it also points toward growth.
Fear thrives in silence. Naming it shatters its power. Start by saying, 'I’m afraid of being judged,' or, 'I’m scared to fail publicly.' When you identify the exact thing you’re afraid of, you take it out of the dark and into the light, where you can work with it. Everyone—yes, everyone—deals with fear. The question isn’t whether you’ll feel it, but what you’ll do when it arrives. Courage is a practice, and each act of honesty strengthens that muscle.
Throughout my life, I’ve found that fear often disguises itself as cultural conditioning. Growing up Nigerian, I was raised to respect elders, to avoid 'talking back,' and to not draw attention to myself. Yet, I also come from a culture that honors boldness and resilience. To live fully, I’ve had to unlearn the smallness that culture sometimes demanded and redefine what bravery looks like for me. You have to do that work too—to identify where your fears come from, understand the stories behind them, and decide which ones still deserve space in your life.
Once you’ve named your fears, you must decide to speak anyway. Speaking truth isn’t easy—it can cost you comfort, approval, or even opportunity. But silence costs you yourself. One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned is that truth-tellers don’t wait for permission. I wrote about race, gender, and social issues long before it felt 'safe' to do so. The fear never disappeared; I simply learned that my integrity mattered more than my reputation.
The times we’re most afraid to speak are usually the moments that matter most. Maybe you need to call out injustice at work, have a hard conversation with a friend, or push back against a culture of mediocrity. Speaking up invites discomfort, but it also builds authenticity. When you use your voice, you remind others that they can do the same.
The truth is, people respect those who are consistent with their values. You may not always be liked, but you will be trusted. Being a professional troublemaker means knowing that sometimes, you will disrupt comfort zones—including your own. You will risk being misunderstood, but you will also create space for healing and evolution. Leadership requires that kind of boldness.
