Key Chapters
You’d think the world began with something dramatic—like an explosion or fireworks—but nope, it started with Chaos. Not chaos as in ‘messy room chaos,’ but a swirling void of nothingness. Out of this emptiness came Gaea, the Earth, who decided it was time to get things moving. She gave birth to Ouranos, the Sky, and soon enough, Earth and Sky became the first divine couple. Their relationship? Complicated, to say the least. Ouranos loved Gaea but feared their children—monstrous beings like the Cyclopes and the hundred-handed giants—so he did what paranoid fathers tend to do: he locked them away.
Gaea wasn’t having it. She encouraged her youngest Titan, Kronos, to stand up to his dad. Kronos, being ambitious and armed with a wicked scythe, overthrew Ouranos in a scene that would make even a horror movie director squirm. That’s how the Titans came to rule, with Kronos sitting on the throne as king of the cosmos. But if there’s one thing you learn from Greek myth, it’s that what goes around always comes around—especially if it involves power-hungry immortals.
Kronos might have been on top of the world, but he had paranoia issues worse than his father’s. A prophecy told him one of his kids would overthrow him, so he did what any totally rational parent would do—he swallowed them whole. Every single baby, gone, except the youngest: Zeus. Rhea, his mother, couldn’t bear to lose another child, so she tricked Kronos with a stone wrapped in a blanket and hid baby Zeus away on Crete.
Zeus grew up fed by divine goat milk and raised by nymphs, which apparently builds character. When he was grown, he pulled the ultimate comeback: he freed his siblings, made Kronos spit them out, and kicked off the Titanic family feud known as the Titanomachy. For ten long years, the gods and Titans battled it out until Zeus and his allies—now known as the Olympians—won. The Titans were sent to Tartarus, the underworld prison, and Olympus was established as the new head office of the universe.
