Key Chapters
Before you can dream big, you have to identify what small voices have been whispering lies into your heart. Over the years, I’ve learned that the first and most powerful barrier to living fully isn’t our lack of talent or opportunity—it’s the internal narrative that says we’re not enough. These beliefs are sneaky; they often sound responsible, cautious, even mature. But they keep us confined, circling the same safe routines that never stir our souls.
When I ask people what they’d do if fear wasn’t part of the equation, they often answer quickly—the dream is still buried inside them. What’s missing is permission. Permission to believe that their story matters. Permission to make mistakes along the way. Permission to change direction when new truths emerge. Recognizing limiting beliefs starts with awareness: I challenge you to pay attention to every thought that begins with, “I can’t,” “I shouldn’t,” or “That’s impossible.” Those statements are rarely objective; they’re stories shaped by past disappointments, outdated assumptions, or borrowed discouragements.
When we give authority to these stories, we surrender agency over our lives. I’ve found that writing down these lies and replacing them with truth is one of the most freeing exercises you can do. For example, “I’m not qualified” becomes “I’m willing to learn.” “I don’t have time” becomes “I’ll make time for what matters.”
As you confront these internal barriers, you’ll likely begin spotting the external ones too—circumstances that feel permanent but aren’t. Jobs, relationships, habits, environments—all can reinforce the belief that you’re stuck, but you aren’t. When you begin dismantling those false walls, your world expands.
The funny thing about limiting beliefs is that they appear most rational at the moment when your dream begins to take shape. They’re protective mechanisms designed to keep you safe, not fulfilled. But safe living never grows us. So, give those fears names, acknowledge them, thank them for their concern, and then tell them you’re moving forward anyway.
Understanding your purpose is the compass that directs your dreams. Without clarity, ambition can scatter—energy spent on everything, progress made on nothing. In my own journey, I discovered that purpose isn’t found in grand epiphanies; it’s found in quiet reflection. It’s when we ask: Why does this matter to me? What impact do I want to leave? Who am I becoming in the process?
Purpose gives your dream its moral center. It transforms goals from self-gratifying pursuits into acts of service, connection, and growth. For me, as a lawyer, professor, and founder of Love Does, purpose has always revolved around showing extravagant love. When love is the motive, clarity follows—it sharpens every decision, because love always aims toward freedom and hope.
Yet many of us chase goals without purpose. We collect achievements but never feel fulfilled because we’ve lost sight of meaning. In 'Dream Big,' I invite you to pause until you see the pattern behind your passions. Those recurring themes—justice, creativity, compassion—are clues to your purpose. Once you recognize them, let them inform everything else.
Purpose also brings resilience. When the inevitable obstacles arrive, you’ll endure because your motive isn’t comfort—it’s calling. Clarity in purpose lets you take criticism without losing focus because you’re anchored in conviction, not approval. So, if your dream still feels hazy, don’t rush it. Spend time asking the hard questions, stripping away false ambitions until what remains is something undeniably you.
