Key Chapters

The first step toward thinking bold is understanding just how rapidly our world is changing. Most people assume progress happens linearly — one predictable step after another. But exponential change moves differently. It looks slow at first, almost imperceptible, and then suddenly — it explodes. One moment, a technology seems irrelevant. The next, it’s rewriting entire industries.

When I co-founded Singularity University, I wanted to give leaders a place to see this reality firsthand. Technologies like robotics, AI, and digital manufacturing are growing not by percentages, but by powers. Doubling periods of 12 to 24 months mean that what was once the domain of governments and corporations is now in the hands of startups, and soon, individuals. For example, when computing power doubles, cost halves, and that opens doors for innovation on unpredictable scales. A young developer armed with open-source code and a 3D printer can now challenge industrial giants once thought impregnable.

This isn’t theory — it’s history in motion. Robotics are enabling fully automated manufacturing lines. Artificial intelligence is no longer just beating humans at chess; it’s diagnosing diseases, designing materials, composing music. Synthetic biology is giving us the tools to rewrite life itself, enabling us to create fuels, medicines, and food from genetic code. The convergence of these exponential technologies forms the foundation of a revolution that doesn’t just create new markets — it destroys old limits.

Understanding these curves — and positioning yourself ahead of them — is the modern entrepreneur’s superpower. It’s not enough to be good at what exists now; the key is to anticipate what will be possible next year, or five. Exponential entrepreneurs skate to where the puck is going, not where it is. That’s how moonshots begin.

Moonshots begin not with technology, but with mindset. When President Kennedy declared that America would put a man on the moon, he didn’t have a complete plan or the necessary technology — he had an audacious goal that galvanized imagination. That’s what I call a ‘moonshot mindset’: setting a target so ambitious it forces creative leaps.

At the heart of that mindset lies a particular psychology — one that overcomes fear, embraces uncertainty, and operates beyond perceived limits. In my own experience with XPRIZE, I saw how setting a seemingly impossible challenge — like a private spacecraft reaching space twice within two weeks — attracted some of the most extraordinary innovators on the planet. The key was not to minimize risk, but to harness purpose. Each team’s boldness stemmed from a deeper drive: the desire to contribute, to matter, to make a dent in the universe.

Scientific studies on flow states, which Steven Kotler has extensively researched, show that people perform at their highest when deeply immersed in challenging but meaningful work. This mental state — flow — amplifies creativity, learning, and persistence. Entrepreneurs who master flow can operate in what feels like accelerated time. The confidence to act boldly, then, emerges not from arrogance but from disciplined momentum — from aligning purpose with performance.

Moonshot thinking is contagious. Once you begin to see limits as design constraints rather than immovable barriers, you start asking better questions: Why can’t we? How might we? What if the impossible is just version one of what’s possible? When you marry that mindset with exponential tools, extraordinary becomes achievable.
