Meditation isn’t the absence of thoughts; it’s the homecoming of awareness. Effort, on the other hand, creates resistance. Imagine stirring a bowl of muddy water—you never get clarity that way. But if you leave it alone, gravity naturally does the work, and the water turns clear on its own. That’s how the mind behaves when you meditate with ease.
I often remind my students: the bliss you’re looking for comes when you allow—even when thoughts appear messy or your body fidgets. When you drop the idea of 'doing it right', something remarkable happens. The mind begins to unwind. Rest comes not from making it happen, but from letting it happen. You don’t work your way into peace; you fall into it, gently, by no longer resisting.
This is not passivity—it’s receptivity. You are giving your body and mind permission to reset themselves in their own natural rhythm. Once that shift takes place, meditation stops being a task and becomes an experience of grace, something that feels effortless, yet profoundly restorative.
Meditation is often misunderstood as a battle with thoughts. People sit down expecting stillness, but instead find themselves bombarded by worries, plans, and random memories. They assume something’s wrong. That reaction arises from a misunderstanding of what the mind is supposed to do. The mind’s job is to think—it creates thoughts like the heart pumps blood. So what’s important is not stopping thoughts, but changing your relationship to them.
In my teaching, I liken thoughts to ripples on a pond. You can’t make the surface calm by force. But if you relax and allow those ripples, the water naturally grows clear. Meditation is the art of no longer being disturbed by the ripples. You let thoughts pass without judgment, without chasing or repressing them. Some will be profound, others totally mundane. That’s fine. This process itself allows the nervous system to settle and restore balance.
Once you understand that thoughts are part of the healing, your entire approach changes. You stop resisting what arises, and resistance is the only thing that prevents deep rest. That means—even on the days when meditation feels chaotic—you’re progressing. Your body knows what it’s doing. Your mind’s movement is a sign that it’s releasing built-up tension. When you stop fighting, the release becomes deeper, quieter, and more refreshing.
