The Unfair Advantage: How You Already Have What It Takes to Succeed: Summary & Key Insights
by Ash Ali, Hasan Kubba
About This Book
The Unfair Advantage explores how personal circumstances, unique experiences, and hidden strengths can be leveraged to achieve success in business and life. The authors argue that success is not solely determined by hard work or talent but by recognizing and using one’s own 'unfair advantages'—factors such as background, personality, and network—that others may not have. Drawing from their entrepreneurial journeys, Ali and Kubba provide a practical framework for identifying and maximizing these advantages to create opportunities and overcome obstacles.

Key Chapters
We live in a culture obsessed with meritocracy—the idea that success is purely the result of talent and effort. It’s an appealing story because it makes success feel fair, predictable, and deserved. But when you look more closely, you see that the world doesn’t actually work that way. Some people start ten steps ahead with connections, access, or inherited resources. Others face invisible barriers. Pretending those conditions don’t matter only creates guilt for those who ‘fail’ and hubris for those who succeed. By naming the 'unfair advantage,' we strip away the illusion of perfect equality and replace it with something more empowering. If you understand your unique starting point, you can play to your true strengths rather than fighting battles that aren’t yours to fight. Success isn’t random, but neither is it entirely built by willpower—it’s a combination of discernment, timing, and resourcefulness.
When Ash joined Just Eat as one of its earliest employees, his deep understanding of grassroots marketing in urban communities turned out to be a decisive differentiator. His background in the working-class neighborhoods of Birmingham, far from being a setback, allowed him to connect authentically with the customer base the company needed most. Hasan’s story is similar: his sensitivity to social dynamics as an outsider gave him the empathy and strategic insight to recognize gaps others ignored. Once we began to see patterns like these, we realized almost every 'overnight success' story conceals hidden layers of advantage beneath the surface. The key is awareness—when you understand what hand you’ve been dealt, you can finally start playing it smart.
We developed the MILES framework to map the different types of advantages people possess. MILES stands for Money, Intelligence and Insight, Location and Luck, Education and Expertise, and Status. Each letter captures a dimension of opportunity that can amplify your efforts—or constrain them if you ignore it. Most people focus obsessively on one area, such as education or intelligence, without realizing that success often depends on a combination. What matters isn’t how much you have in each category, but how you lean into what is already within your reach.
Money represents financial capital—the buffer that buys you time, experimentation, and access. Intelligence and Insight cover how you think, learn, and interpret the world differently. Location and Luck refer to being in the right environment at the right moment. Education and Expertise involve learning and skill mastery, both formal and informal. Status embodies your social capital—reputation, networks, and visibility. Together, these elements form an ecosystem of advantage.
You can’t necessarily change your starting point, but you can identify asymmetries others overlook. For example, if you don’t have money, perhaps you compensate with insight or creativity. If your education is unconventional, perhaps your perspective gives you fresh ideas the mainstream ignores. We want you to stop benchmarking against someone else’s race and start mastering your own terrain.
