We developed the MILES framework to map the different types of advantages people possess. MILES stands for Money, Intelligence and Insight, Location and Luck, Education and Expertise, and Status. Location and Luck refer to being in the right environment at the right moment. Education and Expertise involve learning and skill mastery, both formal and informal. You can’t necessarily change your starting point, but you can identify asymmetries others overlook. For example, if you don’t have money, perhaps you compensate with insight or creativity.
