Associating stitches ideas from disparate fields together; questioning provokes new lines of thought; observing brings insight from behaviors and systems; networking injects fresh perspectives; and experimenting turns inspiration into concrete learning.

In essence, innovators behave like artists and scientists simultaneously. They perceive the world as a living laboratory, constantly asking, ‘What if?’ This pattern of thinking is not reserved for lone geniuses but can be nurtured in individuals and organizations. Associating is perhaps the most powerful of all discovery skills because it connects everything else. At its heart, associating is about linking ideas that have never been linked before. Hal Gregersen is a leadership and innovation scholar at MIT Sloan School of Management. Clayton M. Christensen (1952–2020) was a professor at Harvard Business School and the author of the influential book 'The Innovator’s Dilemma.' Together, they have conducted extensive research on innovation and leadership in business.
